More pictures

25 April 2006

The original photo of these socks (the one with the book) was taken with a flash, so I've been endeavouring to get one taken in daylight, as I think that gives a better idea of the colours. So, here are a couple of photos of the socks in sunlight. I think the first one gives the truest colour representation.

Haven't done as much knitting as I'd hoped today, so just one heel flap is completed.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise the wool details had dropped off the front page of the blog.

So, this gorgeous hand painted 100% Aussie Merino 2ply wool is from Marta's Yarns. This should be a direct link to the type of wool. However, there are many more colours available in the store than what's on the site. You can even create your own "mix" by having 2 different strands of 2ply wool wound together into a ball to give you your sock yarn (ie fingering weight).

Progress Update

Both socks are now at "heel flap" stage.

After I knitted all the rows on the second sock, I discovered that the first sock was 10 rows short. This is because there was an "incident" with my counter, when it was accidentally turned ahead 10 rows. Anyway... once I had them the same length, I decided to add another 12 rows to each, just to make them a little longer.

So Tuesday, (ANZAC Day, a national holiday) I'm planning lots of knitting.

I signed up for the SYAC Spring Feet Sock Swap, so I'm currently deciding what yarn and pattern to use for my sock recipient.

Hmm... decisions... decisions... decisions...

Current Socks

20 April 2006

Gentleman's Plain Winter Sock from Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks.

The one on the left has about 6 rows of stocking stitch knitted and the one on the right is where the pattern suggests the leg should end. I'm thinking about making them longer, and I'll make a decision when the second one gets to the same length.

I think the pattern is just right for this wool. The rib adds a little interest and the stocking stitch really shows off the colours.

Newest sock

18 April 2006

Here's my newest sock. A friend very kindly took this picture with the macro feature on her digital camera (thanks R!), so I've left the file a little larger than usual, so we can appreciate the stitch definition.

I'm using 2.25mm bamboo DPNs and my gorgeous Marta's Yarn (info here). It's so soft and a dream to knit with! The pattern is another from Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks. It has a long cuff (a K3, P2 rib) followed by stocking stitch.

I've just cast on the second one, and I'll knit 108 rows to match this one, then I'll decide if I want to make them longer, or not.

Hope you all enjoyed your extra long weekend!

Finished socks!

12 April 2006

At last these are finished! Not sure why they required so much frogging, but in the end they've turned out perfectly IMO. As they're not for me, I haven't tried them on, but I did put a water bottle in one, in an attempt to show the rib better. The rib becomes more visible when the sock is stretched.

Yarrow Ribbed Socks from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush. I used a different heel and toe though. Yarn is ONLine Linie 3 Supersocke 100 Colour #661 knitted using 2.25mm bamboo DPNs.

Scarf Update

"Popcorn" 100% hand dyed wool, produced by rainbow wools for Calico & Chintz. Shade is "Pebbles" and batch #01. I'm using Birch 10mm needles. I've used one ball and I cast on 21 stitches and it's currently 80cm long.

The wool is a pleasure to knit with. It's so soft and if you "scrunch" up the scarf it's gorgeously "squishy".

As far as I know Calico and Chintz don't have a website, but you can find them here:

New project

11 April 2006

As I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with my next sock and as I wanted to knit whilst I watched Survivor, I started on a scarf with this gorgeous yarn! Simple garter stitch on 10mm needles. Looks good so far. I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Feeling better

today. The back's down to "achy" from "excruciating pain" and though I still have a cold at least I'm not sneezing every other minute!

I finally managed to get the socks finished (YAY!). As it's already dark here, I'll take a photo in the daylight tomorrow, to get a true representation of the colours.

I'm unsure what to start next. I have been trying to decide how I want to knit the wool I got from Marta's (blue/purple one). I *think* it just wants to be plain stocking stitch. I tried baby cables, but they're really not visible. Anyone have any pattern suggestions?

Still alive... barely

10 April 2006
I've been away from home for a week, back last night and now I've the cold to end all colds. Sneezes galore! Which only serve to aggravate the lower back pain which arrived on Friday *sigh*

Not much knitting progress lately. I'm STILL knitting the same socks. One just needs the toe grafted and the other I'm working on the toe. (Have frogged these toes a few times, in an effort to make the socks long enough). Hopefully I'll be able to finish them tonight.

I did finish the scarf for the KOGO project but I forgot to take a photo of it once it was finished! Oops. It was about 15cm and 1.5m long and seemed to take me forever to knit. I'm not sure why.

I do have some more on order, but I'm hoping that won't come for awhile, so that I have the chance to get a bunch of this knitted into gorgeous socks.
